Stuck in Space: Two Astronauts Pass the Time
Aboard the International Space Station
Two astronauts are stuck in space after their Boeing spacecraft developed a problem.
It's been more than two months since Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita Williams arrived at the International Space Station for a planned eight-day stay. But a problem with their Boeing Starliner spacecraft has kept them stranded in orbit.
Wilmore and Williams are the first astronauts to fly on the Starliner, which is designed to carry four astronauts to and from the space station. Boeing is developing the spacecraft under a contract with NASA.
The Starliner's problems began shortly after launch on May 20. The spacecraft's main engine failed to fire, and it was forced to enter a lower-than-planned orbit. NASA and Boeing engineers are still working to determine what caused the engine failure.
In the meantime, Wilmore and Williams are passing the time by conducting experiments, exercising, and taking part in outreach activities. They also have been spending time talking to their families and friends back on Earth.
Both astronauts have said they are in good spirits and are looking forward to returning to Earth. But they also know that they could be stuck in space for several more months.
NASA is working with Boeing to develop a plan to bring Wilmore and Williams home. The agency is also looking for ways to prevent similar problems from happening in the future.
